Describe a fruit.

The following writing assignment is from section B of an 11 Plus entrance exam for an independent school. If you are preparing for such an exam, I advise that you think about the title and write your own answer BEFORE reading my attempt. Describe your favourite fruit and why you like it. Marks will be awarded for:

·       creative thinking

·       unusual descriptions

·       accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar 

Time allowance: 20 minutes

Length: approximately half a side of A4 paper.

Teacher’s thoughts: As well as the physical description of the fruit itself (I chose watermelon), I described memories evoked by the fruit (which are fictional by the way) and circumstances in which this fruit would be enjoyed (on a blazing hot summer’s day). This provides a handy context for framing my description of the fruit.
